And when I say ‘belated’ I really mean it. We were so excited and honoured to be nominated for the Liebster Blog Award by Calli and Travis from Have Blog Will Travel way back in May last year, but initially decided to hold off from completing the required blog post for a little while. For those unfamiliar with the Liebster, it is an internet award (i.e. not a physical one) given to bloggers by other bloggers. It’s an awesome gesture of appreciation and support from bloggers and also a fun way to discover new blogs!
It may be nine months later, but I am still so stoked to award five other travel bloggers with this honour and also to finally answer Calli and Travis’ questions. I was hoping to confer with JR for the answers but he’s away for work right now.
1. How did you choose the name of your blog?
We always wanted a name that would reflect how we prefer to spend our time exploring quieter, lesser known and off-the-beaten track destinations. We prefer to travel overland and take the long way anywhere, so describing ourselves as ‘Off Track’ seemed to combine our favourite kind of places plus our distracted and unpredictable travel style.
2. What is your one must-pack travel item?
Spending a lot of time in the outdoors and off the beaten track, our must-pack item is our simple-to-use water filter Lifestraws. With these having such a long life span, we know we will always have access to safe water….unless we suddenly end up in a desert for days on end!
3. What country is currently topping your must-visit list?
Cuba, without a doubt! JR visited back when he was a child, while I have never been. We’ve wanted to go ever since we moved to Canada three years ago and with relations with the USA improving, I’m sure there will be lots of changing happening over the next couple of years. I imagine that Cuba is going to turn into a major destination for US tourists very soon, so we want to visit before that happens.
4. If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?
Teleportation! I’d love to be able to go anywhere in the world without flying. As much as our trips are usually more about the journey than the destination, a head start would be nice sometimes! And the ability to visit my family at home in the UK in an instant would be pretty awesome.
5. Which post are you most proud of?
I’m not sure how I would have answered this question more than a month ago since the post I’m thinking of is actually pretty recent. I started this year wanting to write more ‘how to’ posts for aspiring travellers, and my first project – an application guide to Canada’s working holiday program (IEC) – has been received exceptionally well. All the lovely emails, tweets and comments I’ve received definitely made all those hours of research worth it!
6. What aspect of travel do you dread the most?
I really hate packing. We don’t usually return to the same place after a long trip, so every time we leave I end up pretty stressed trying to organise which of our possessions to sell, give away or send elsewhere. Ideally we just need to cut down on ‘stuff’ full stop. We’re working on it.
7. Share with us one fact most people may not know about you.
I can read pretty fast. Depending on the subject, I can usually read paragraphs all in one go rather than sentence by sentence. It’s a really awesome skill to have (for navigating for example) but it also meant that I read through the entire children’s section of three libraries by the age of 11.
8. If you could only eat one food item for the rest of your life what would it be?
Ooh that is hard. If weight wasn’t a worry, I’d definitely go for cheese. With so many varieties it would be a while until I was bored. A slightly healthier alternative for this question would be chickpeas. I really do love them, though not with cheese now that I think about it.
9. What is your best travel memory to date?
And I thought the last question was difficult! My favourite memory is the first day of a big trip. The excitement, the happiness at being on the road again, the freedom, all the possibilities ahead…I would be a very happy girl if I could bottle that.
10. Where are you off to next?
This is something I actually haven’t announced on the blog yet, but Jean Robert and I will be in Europe for most of May. This is our first time travelling together without our own vehicle so it will be a different kind of trip…though I’m sure we will fit a road trip in there somewhere! We are going to be in Iceland, Italy and the UK for a month. It will be an exceptionally exciting trip back to the UK since my brother – who I haven’t seen in two years – will also be visiting from Australia at the same time. I can’t wait for Spring!
